French student highlights exchange experience at Faculty of Science, USACH
Rémi Verguin, an exchange student in Physics Engineering from Université Clermont Auvergne, France, has had an enriching personal and academic experience during his valuable internship at the Faculty of Science of USACH. He is currently working towards obtaining his Master's degree in Physics.
Since his arrival in Chile on April 1st, Rémi has had the opportunity to delve into research in the field of quantum mechanics under the guidance of Dr. Guillermo Romero, Vice Dean of Research and Postgraduate Studies at the Faculty of Science of USACH. Specifically, his research focuses on the quantum dynamics of many-body systems in the context of superconducting circuits, with a particular emphasis on the topic of "Parametric Resonances in Many-Body Systems".
"Basically, we are using a lattice system”, explains the 22-year-old student, “where we place a quantum system on each site of the lattice. We have experimented with spins and bosons for this purpose. The lattice itself constitutes a many-body system. Our study focuses on a Hamiltonian that exhibits periodic time dependence in the hopping rates. We have observed that when we modify the driving frequency to specific values, the system exhibits various intriguing behaviors. This aspect of our research holds considerable interest."
The Vice Dean of Research and Postgraduate Studies at the Faculty of Science commended Remi's skills, stating, "Rémi is truly talented and has demonstrated rapid learning abilities. Despite his recent arrival on April 1st, we are already achieving highly interesting results. Working alongside him and our PhD student, Rubén Peña, we are actively gathering extensive information to prepare an article on this topic within the next couple of months".
Similarly, the young student, who will be in Chile until July 31th of this year, expressed appreciation for the support he has received at USACH during his internship, stating, "I have learned a great deal and feel that I have made significant progress during my time at the university. Whenever I have encountered doubts along the way, I have felt the support of Professor Guillermo".
In addition to the academic value of the internship, Rémi mentioned that he has greatly appreciated the cultural exchange and has been impressed by the kindness of the people in our country. This experience has also provided him with the opportunity to explore iconic places in Chile, including Puerto Montt, Chiloé, Pucón, and Cajón del Maipo. He has been consistently amazed by the stunning landscapes, particularly captivated by the beauty of the majestic mountains and their surroundings.
The French student affirms that the internship at USACH has had a significant impact on his life, providing a conducive environment for both his academic and personal growth. It has offered him new perspectives on life and his field of study. He expresses his hope to return to France in the near future to pursue a double degree and continue advancing in new challenges.
